October 31, 2008Demos: Bosses "should embrace Facebook"
"Companies should not dismiss staff who use social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo at work as merely time-wasters, a Demos study suggests. Attempts to control employees' use of such software could damage firms in the long run by limiting the way staff communicate, the think tank said." Read the full BBC article, then download Network Citizens: Power and Responsibility at Work. It's good stuff (and it's a free download, despite the £10 price tag). I would go as far as to say "bosses must embrace social networks." Two (of countless) reasons: So don't be stupid, bosses. Embrace social networks. Today's Millennial students, the ones I teach at my university, are hard-wired to communicate via social media. Organizations must embrace it or lose employees to more enlightened firms who have found ways to incorporate the many ways in which people can now communicate. Lead on, my dear friend.
