Such fun! Copenhagen meetup with Eric Schwartzman

Last night, some of the local social media crowd got to chow down with Eric Schwartzman, PR guy, podcaster and blogger. Eric was in town with his client Andre Lawless after a hectic few days working in the Danish countryside. It was a festive, fun, loud evening and -- and this is the cool thing about social media meetups -- we were old friends within minutes, even though none of us had met more than three or four of the others.IMG_0998

Trine-Maria Kristensen has posted some photos. The other faces are Karin Høgh, Jette Harthimmer, Jan Lund Thomsen, Christine Duus and Asya Partan. And me, of course.

Eric interviewed us all, despite the noisy venue, so you may soon be able to experience Copenhagen vicariously on Eric's 'cast.

I've tagged only the people present with discoverable blogs or podcasts, but I can add others. Just let me know.

Special podcast from the Stibo Graphic Forum

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of talking about social media at the annual Stibo Forum held by Stibo Graphic for its many customers. Never missing a chance to show off their command of the medium, Lee Hopkins and I recorded Chat #18 of the Better Desirable Roasted Communication Café podcast directly from the Forum. And we were joined by special guest star Donna Papacosta!

In this chat, you'll hear Lee, Donna, and Allan talk about how cheap & easy podcasting is, and move on to discuss why we bother to use social media. Is it masochism? Or does it have real implications for our businesses?

We cite, among other cases, Whirlpool's American Family podcast, GM Fastlane Blog, the Southwest Airlines blog, and SecondLife.

I apologize for the sometimes-iffy sound quality.

Download [9mb] and take an 18 minute coffee break with Lee and Allan. And don’t forget to subscribe to the RSS feed to catch every sparkling discussion as we pass the coffee pot around. And if you are an iTunes user, you can find our podcast on the iTunes Music Store (for free, of course!).

Copenhagen meetup and interview with Eric Schwartzman, PR blogger and podcaster, Sept. 23

UPDATE: We will meet at Café André Citroên at 1900. Again, let me know if you want to be a part, we have a couple of spaces left.

f-e

Eric Schwartzman's On the Record podcast and his blog Spinfluencer are required listening/reading for communication professionals working with social media. If I had to cut back to just ten blogs, his would be one. And if I had to cut back to just ten podcasts, his would be one. They are just that good.

Danish/Oresund bloggers/podcasters/advertising & PR folks have a great opportunity to meet and chat with Eric on September 23. He's in town that night and wants to meet some of the local social media folks. And, get this, he wants to record  a "special episode of On the Record...Online" with some of us as the interviewees.

I will make reservations, almost certainly within 10 minutes walk of Rådhuspladsen, for 16 of us. 11 places are already reserved, so there's five left. But if there is a surge in demand, I will try to find a place that can take more of us (Spiseloppen?). Please reserve your spot either by leaving a comment below or emailing me.

Robert Reich now has RSS!

A couple of months ago, I noted that Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor, is blogging (on Blogspot, no less). Since then, Reich has added a feed, so he's now someone I can read daily.

Thanks, Bob!

Chat# 10 at the Better Desirable Roasted Communications Café Podcast

In today's chat, Allan reports on IABC's European Leadership Institute & the use of social media in IABC Europe. Lee likes the first chapter of Jeremy Wright's book: why businesses need to get their heads around social media. And why you should be worried if you are not being talked about in the blogosphere.

Lee muses "Is this the beginning of the social media shakeout? We are starting to see Web 2.0 businesses fail." Allan and Lee discuss the demise of PubSub.

And then we discuss blogging and politics -- politicians who blog, and bloggers who cover politicians. We also have a good laugh at Jupiter Research's expense, thanks to the hard work of Toby Bloomberg and Fard Johnmar. And we make the obligatory mention of Robert Scoble.

In short, Chat#10 is more than just a coffee break -- it's a free ranging buffet with lots of good stuff under the heat lamps.

Chat #6 at the Better Desirable Roasted Communications Café podcast

Bdrcclogo125x125v2_3Lee's been to the bookstore & talks about his purchases, especially An Army of Davids, by Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit). Not to be outdone, Allan reviews his signed first edition of Blogging for Business, by our friend Shel Holtz and Ted Demopoulos (they also have a website for the book).

Other books, writers, magazines and blogs mentioned: Jeremy Wright, Hugh Hewitt (Blog: the Information Reformation), Virginia Postrel (The Future and its Enemies), Reason Magazine, the Dynamist Blog, Naked Conversations, Shel Israel, Robert Scoble.

We had comments last week from David Phillips, John Wagner, Donna Papacosta and Constantin Basturea, which we discuss.

Chat #5 at Better Desirable Roasted Communication Café Podcast

Bdrcclogo125x125v2_3 In today's chat, Lee talks about Donna Papacosta's recent post on why you must tell a story if you want to be memorable as a conference speaker. Allan amiably agrees until Lee says "but that's not what you said a couple of weeks ago..."
Allan riffs on John Wagner's recent posts about industry credibility. Allan believes if the average business-person's perception of the industry is going to improve, it's up to small-and-medium-sized agencies to do it. Lee is not so sure. And since John doesn't like podcasts, we'll probably never know what he thinks.

Chat #4 at Better Desirable Roasted Communication Café Podcast

Bdrcclogo125x125v2_2 In today's chat, Allan and Lee talk about some of the running themes of the IABC International Conference.

  • Social Media & Web 2.0: Communicators know about it, but want to know a lot more.
  • "Can I have a seat at the table?": the perennial plea of communicators gets cold water thrown on it.
  • IABC leadership wants 20,000 members, but is rather silent about how to achieve that.
  • Allan and Lee hope to be in New Orleans at the next conference.

People, organizations and places mentioned in today's convo: IABC, IABC International Conference, Neville Hobson, Shel Holtz, Joseph Thornley, Rodney Gray, Shelley Bird, Vancouver, New Orleans.

The conference was extensively live-blogged by Joseph Thornley.

Chat #3 at Better Desirable Roasted Communication Café Podcast

In today's chat, Lee advises comms students and new professionals to jump into blogging and podcasting, if only to join a global network of colleagues, friends, and mentors. Allan says "you betcha", and advises also joining IABC or PRSA, or both. Allan also suggests joining Ned Lundquist's Job of the Week newsletter & discusses why JOTW is a networking success story.

Bdrcclogo125x125v2_1Lee announces our new website: http://www.commscafe.com.

People or organizations mentioned in this show: Robert French's MarCom Blog, Ross Monaghan's The Media Pod Blog, Neville Hobson, Shel Holtz, Jeremy Pepper, IABC, PRSA, The Job of the Week Newsletter, Fast Company.

Note to listeners: because of technical upgrades at Chez Hopkins and Allan's travel schedule, the café may be silent next week. But subscribe to the RSS feed and you are guaranteed not to miss a single show!

Better Desirable Roasted Coffee Communication Café: Show #2

Better Desirable Roasted Communications Café Show #2

BDRCC logoWith Lee Hopkins and Allan Jenkins.

Lee opines that many of the principles of fiction writing can be applied to business writing -- that the steps of story formation, encoding, weaving, and reception are much the same in both genres. Allan is skeptical: perhaps the thinking process is similar, but should a business story be presented like fiction? Allan favors putting conclusions up front in business.

Allan mulls over what the polarization between the creative class and non-creative class will mean for business communication over the next few years. Lee is skeptical: nothing that some good niche-marketing won't fix.

Lee and Allan discuss virtual teams and wonder when leading PR/communication bloggers might start banding together in virtual teams for client service. All in all, 18 minutes of good ol' fashioned insight and mental sparks.
The pdf that Lee talks about is here.

A mash letter: 100 podcasts later -- and they still aren't boring.

Seinfeld was funny the first season. 100 episodes later, you thought, "Is this a re-run?" Same with "Sex and the City".... by episode 100,  you were making book whether Samantha would be in bed before the first commercial (Yes, you were, so just admit it).

100 episodes makes you boring.

But.. not if we are talking  Hobson and Holtz, the Huntley and Brinkley of the PR world. The guys just keep rambling on, but never bore us. Not me, anyway.

They have terrible time control. They couldn't do a one-hour show if it killed them. Wayne Newton gets more fan mail, but Wayne Newton reads only a little bit of it on stage. Not Neville and Shel... they read it all. And talk about it.

And I am glad they do.  Yeah, they can ramble, but I defy the professional communicator to not get a good 50 minutes of juice from any 75 minute FIR... that sure beats morning drive-time radio!

Shel, Neville -- keep on keeping on!

Yes, I admit I suffer from Podcast Anxiety. Fortunately, there's treatment. I just don't think Danish National Health Insurance covers it...

Burningbird Introduces ThoughtCast

Shelley Powers' Burningbird is always a thought-provoking read: I approach her blog with care because she usually hands me a long, thoughtful post that will occupy my frontal lobes the rest of the day, no matter what deadline I might face.

One of her latest posts introduces a new blog: Jenny Attiyeh's ThoughtCast, launched this week. Always looking for mind-stretching reading and listening, I'm already excited about this blog:

"Jenny’s first podcast is an interview with Ilan Stavans Latino and Latin-America literature critic and author of “Spanglish”. Coming up will be interviews with the Cambridge author Carol Bundy, who wrote a biography of Charles Russell Lowell, Jr; and poet David Ferry and Virgil Scholar Richard Thomas examination of Virgil’s Georgics."

Shelley describes how she designed Jenny's blog: a tight case-study on blog design.

EU Considers Net-TV Regulation; Implications for Podcasters?

Via MarketingVOX comes this Times article: EU seeks to regulate television on the net.

Since the technology that makes Internet-TV possible is not dissimilar from the technology that makes  Internet-radio possible, I wonder if podcasting will come under regulatory scrutiny?`

After all, if Internet-TV stations can be held to "fairness" and "equal time" standards, couldn't podcasters? And, if podcasters can be, why not bloggers?

Is this a slippery slope or am I paranoid?
